This edition offers an introduction to English Renaissance poetry, with special focus on Walter Raleigh, Philip Sidney and John Donne. It incorporates selections from their poetry, offering intellectual contexts of their production represented in the selections from the works of Manetti, Pico and Ebreo among other philosophers of the time. The poems have been annotated in detail to facilitate close reading.The book provides a broad view of Renaissance intellectual debates including the developments in Neoplatonist, Humanist and Christian discourses. The common points of focus for many of these wide-ranging debates-human nature, epistemological views on God, and the concepts of love and knowledge-exerted significant influence on the art and poetry of this period.
