Description

D detective Mark Brendon on his holiday suddenly finds himself roped into what appears to be a kidnapping and a murder. Not having come to Dartmoor “to catch murderers, but to catch trout,” he is determined to stay out of things, until he is summoned by the victim’s wife. Defying the local police’s prediction that “it’s all pretty plain sailing, by the look of it,” Brendon finds it anything but and finds twists that will take him from Dartmoor to Cornwall to Italy and into the lives of Jenny’s uncles. Bendon however is out of his depth and an American detective Peter Ganns (arguably the first and perhaps only American detective created by British writer) steps in take up the case. Gann’s particular ability is his “linking up of facts,” and Brendon finds he’s had it all wrong so far.

“A classic detective novel that has never received due recognition.” A Catalogue of Crime by Jacques Barzun and Wendell Hertig
